Synopsis

Aaron rents a one-bedroom apartment just to build a video studio. Ian questions the math—rent on an empty apartment every month? But Aaron's philosophy is clear: what is stupid and awesome? Do that thing to the uttermost. When the apartment inspector comes for a routine check, the loophole is put to the test. Between podcast debates with Ian and four kids who tackle him the moment he walks in the door, Aaron finds his rhythm—five minutes from studio to chaos, living the stupid and awesome life.


The Podcast

Mostly Technical. Episode 47. Split screen: Aaron in Dallas, Ian in... somewhere with better pizza.

"So you're telling me you rented an entire apartment... just for a fake wall."

"It's not just a fake wall. It's a pegboard wall. With tube lights. On Manfrotto autopoles."

Ian stares at the camera. The look of a man who has heard many things, but perhaps not this.

"You're paying rent. On an empty apartment. Every month."

"It's not empty. It has a studio in it."

"It has a bedroom with a fake wall in front of the window. And a living room with... nothing."

"A couch. For thinking."

Ian does the math out loud. "So you've got rent, utilities, internet—for a space you don't live in. You could've rented a desk at a coworking space for a quarter of that."

"Have you been to a coworking space, Ian? Fluorescent lights. Open floor plans. That guy who's definitely running some kind of scheme and won't stop talking about it."

"You're running a scheme!"

"That's different. Mine is stupid and awesome."

Ian pauses. This is a new framework.

"What does that mean?"

"It means—" Aaron leans forward, the way he does when he's about to say something that sounds insane but is actually his whole philosophy. "What is stupid and awesome? I should do that thing to the uttermost."

"That's not a business strategy."

"It's my business strategy."

Ian looks at the camera. The look of a man who has been right about many things and suspects he will be right about this too. "The math doesn't work."

"The math doesn't have to work. The feeling has to work."

"...That's the most Aaron Francis thing you've ever said."

The Apartment

October 2024. A one-bedroom apartment in a Dallas suburb. The Aaron Francis Studio of Light and Sound, fully operational.

The studio is built. A fake wall rises in front of the windows—yes, there's a window behind that wall, which is totally stupid and totally awesome. White pegboard on the left. IKEA cabinets below. Tube lights on Manfrotto autopoles. Black vertical slat backdrop on the right. Nothing touches their walls. The lease said no mounting anything, so Aaron built something freestanding.

The loophole.


A knock at the door. Aaron freezes mid-edit.

The apartment complex does routine inspections. He knew this was coming. He just hoped it wouldn't be today.

He opens the door. A maintenance inspector with a clipboard stands in the hallway.

"Routine inspection. Just need to check the unit."

"Sure. Come on in."

The inspector walks through. Living room—couch, lamp, nothing unusual. Kitchen—clean, functional, standard apartment kitchen.

"Nice place. You keep it tidy."

"Thanks."

They approach the bedroom. The inspector reaches for the door.

Aaron's heart rate increases.

The door opens. The room is dark. Very dark. The inspector flips the light switch. Nothing happens.

"Light's out?"

"I, uh—I use different lighting in here. For work."

The inspector steps inside. Looks around. There's a desk. Cameras on tripods. A pegboard wall with things hanging on it. Another wall with black slats. Professional equipment everywhere.

Something feels... off. The inspector can't quite place it.

"This is all... freestanding?"

"Nothing touches your walls."

The inspector walks the perimeter. Checks the corners. Runs a hand along the pegboard structure. It's true—nothing is mounted. Nothing is screwed in. The whole thing just... stands there.

"Huh."

Aaron waits. The seconds stretch.

The inspector makes a note on the clipboard. Looks around one more time. Squints at the darkness where windows should be.

"Everything's in order."

Aaron exhales. "Great. Thanks for stopping by."

The inspector heads for the door. Pauses. Turns back.

"What do you do in here, exactly?"

"I make videos. About databases."

A long beat. The inspector processes this. Decides not to ask follow-up questions.

"Have a good one."

The door closes. Aaron leans against it. The loophole holds.

The inspection
"Everything's in order."

The Drift

Evening. Aaron's house. Five minutes from the apartment studio.

He walks in the door. Laptop under one arm. Coffee cup in hand. The professional creator returning from his professional creation space.

Four children hit him like a wave.

"Daddy!"

He goes down. Laptop miraculously survives. Coffee does not.

Jennifer watches from the kitchen, orchestrating dinner and chaos simultaneously. "How was work?"

Aaron lies on the floor, covered in small humans. One is explaining something important about dinosaurs. Another is trying to show him a drawing. The babies are just climbing.

"Shipped two videos. Argued with Ian about pricing. Got tackled by the tiny humans."

He looks up at the ceiling. A child sits on his chest.

"Perfect day."


The Advice

Another episode. Another podcast. Ian has opinions.

"Here's my thing. You should charge more."

"I've heard this before."

"Because it's true! You're leaving money on the table."

"I want accessibility."

Ian leans back. The look of a man who has been running HelpSpot for fifteen years and has seen this exact conversation play out a hundred times. "You want to feel good about accessibility. There's a difference."

A beat. Aaron considers this.

"...When did you become a business consultant?"

"I've always been a business consultant. You just never listened."

"I listen."

"You smile and nod and then do whatever you were gonna do anyway."

Aaron smiles. Nods.

"That's fair."


The Prediction

Same podcast. Different day. Ian has more opinions.

"$10 million by 45. That's your goal?"

"That's the goal."

"There's zero chance you're out."

Aaron tilts his head. "What do you mean?"

"I mean you'll hit the number and immediately start planning the next thing. You can't help yourself."

The accusation hangs in the air. Aaron wants to argue. He opens his mouth. Closes it.

"...I'll prove you wrong."

Ian smirks. The smirk of a man who knows exactly how this will end.

"You won't."

Ian's prediction
"There's zero chance you're out."
